Arizona Walked Off the Dodgers, and the NL West Got More Interesting
Arizona walked off the Dodgers 4-3 on Friday.
One-run road losses in August are the games that decide seeding, which is not the same as deciding divisions.
A tight one, in the wrong direction
Arizona walked off Los Angeles 4-3 on Friday. The Dodgers remain the NL West favorite, and adding Tarik Skubal at the deadline is the main reason that is still true after a loss like this one. A favorite dropping a close game on the road is a normal event that changes the odds very little.
Seeding is the real stake
The series carries weight for division positioning and for broader National League playoff seeding, and those are two different prizes decided by the same games. A team can win its division and still enter October in the harder bracket. That is the outcome the rest of this series is actually contesting.
Skubal is the variable
His upcoming starts remain the key focus for the Dodgers' second-half outlook. A deadline acquisition of that size is only partly about the games he wins himself; the rest is what having him at the front does to every other start in the rotation behind him.
