Three teams, two prizes

The division-standings view makes this look like a two-team race with Boston chasing. It is not. The Yankees currently hold the first AL Wild Card spot and the Red Sox hold the second, with Texas in the third spot at 59-58. That means New York and Boston are each playing two separate games at once: catch Tampa Bay for the division, or lock up a wild card if they do not. Every series between now and October carries both implications simultaneously, which is a different, higher-stakes dynamic than “6 games back” communicates on its own.

Games-back is a lagging number. It tells you where a race has been, not how volatile it is likely to be from here.
