Fried set the terms
Max Fried gave New York 6.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. In a 3-2 game that went to the 10th, that line is the whole reason there was a 10th to win. A starter who keeps a one-run game at zero through six is doing something the box score understates, which is protecting a bullpen that has to work the next three days as well.
The standings problem has not changed
The Yankees remain 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay and are still fighting Boston for second. One extra-innings win does not move that. What it does is prevent the alternative, and with roughly seven weeks left the difference between 4.5 back and 5.5 back is the difference between a race and a wild-card discussion.
That is the honest framing for a game like this. It kept a door open. It did not walk through it.
