Russell Westbrook Retires With 209 Triple-Doubles and a Record Nobody Is Chasing

Russell Westbrook, the NBA's all-time leader in triple-doubles and the 2017 Most Valuable Player, announced his retirement on Wednesday after 18 seasons. The farewell message was narrated by Michael B. Jordan and directed by Sean Kelly, and Westbrook's own caption on it read: "Sometimes you don't even know when you've already watched the end."

He finishes with 209 career triple-doubles. He is fifth all-time in assists, having passed Steve Nash and Mark Jackson, and he is the first guard in league history to go past 9,000 career rebounds.

The part that will not be repeated

That rebounding number is the one that gives the career away. Guards are not supposed to be anywhere near it. Westbrook got there by playing a version of basketball that asked him to do everything on every possession for more than a decade, and by being available enough to keep doing it.

He spent his first 11 seasons in Oklahoma City, alongside Kevin Durant and later James Harden in one of the most talented backcourt-and-wing groupings of its era. He was named to the NBA's 75th anniversary team. He finished with the Sacramento Kings.

What it changes now

The immediate effect is roster arithmetic: a high-usage creator comes off the market at a point in the calendar when several contenders are still short of secondary playmaking. That is a real, if small, shift in what is available to teams still trying to solve that problem.

The longer effect is stylistic. The way Westbrook played, constant pressure, enormous usage, counting statistics as a form of argument, was already becoming rarer while he was still doing it. His career reads now as the last full expression of it rather than a template anyone is copying.
