What index inclusion actually does

Every fund that tracks the S&P 500 has to hold what the S&P 500 holds. That is not a view on Reddit; it is a mechanical consequence of the mandate. Passive money buys because it must, on a schedule set by the index committee rather than by anything the company did that week.

Which is why the move happened on the announcement rather than on the effective date. The buying is known in advance, so the price adjusts in advance, and by the time the passive flows arrive the market has usually already met them.

The part that is genuinely notable

Reddit becomes only the second pure-play social media company in the index, after Meta. That is a small club for a category this large, and it is a reminder that inclusion requires profitability tests that most of the sector has never cleared.

AvalonBay leaving is the other half of the transaction and rarely gets read as information. A swap means the committee is not adding a seat, it is reallocating one, and a residential REIT going out while a social platform comes in is a small, real statement about where index-level market value has moved.

What the technical demand does not settle

Forced buying is a one-time event with a known size. It does not recur, it does not compound, and it says nothing about the business.

What holds the price after that is the same set of questions as before the announcement: whether advertising revenue keeps growing at the current rate, whether user trends hold once the traffic sources that drove them normalise, and whether profitability is durable rather than a function of one strong stretch. The index changed who is required to own the stock. It did not change any of that.
