Oil Keeps Swinging on Hormuz Headlines That Have Not Resolved Anything

Brent fluctuated near the mid-$80s after swinging earlier in the week on shifting reports of a possible temporary shipping arrangement.

Brent spent the week going out and coming back, and finished near where the arguing started.

A round trip on shifting reports

Prices dropped on optimism that a temporary shipping arrangement through the Strait of Hormuz was close, then rebounded on concerns that any framework could still leave inbound control with Tehran. Both moves were driven by the same unresolved question rather than by anything that happened to supply.

That distinction matters more than the direction. A market pricing a binary outcome will keep round-tripping until the binary resolves, and the size of each swing says more about positioning than about barrels.

Tanker flows are the tell

The risk premium in this corridor is ultimately set by transit, not by wire copy. Until actual tanker flows change, headlines are moving the price of an expectation. When flows change, they will move the price of oil.

It is worth holding those two apart when reading any week like this one, because they look identical on a chart and are not remotely the same thing.
