Who Is Actually Starting This Weekend, and What Each Choice Says

Preseason starter announcements are not depth charts, but they are the closest thing to one a team publishes in August. This weekend's set splits into three groups, and the grouping is more informative than any individual name.

Teams evaluating a quarterback

Cleveland starts Deshaun Watson against the Bears, with Shedeur Sanders scheduled to start in Week 2 against the Bills. Splitting the two across consecutive weeks rather than alternating series within one game is a choice about the quality of the sample, not about the pecking order.

Los Angeles starts Stetson Bennett, with first-round rookie Ty Simpson also expected to play. New Orleans starts Spencer Rattler against the Jaguars.

Teams protecting one

Chicago sits Caleb Williams; Tyson Bagent is expected to start. Baltimore will not play Lamar Jackson in Saturday's game against the Eagles.

Neither is a story. Both are what a team does when the question at the position has already been answered and the only thing August can supply is risk.

Detroit, which is its own category

Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer started Thursday's game after Teddy Bridgewater's sudden retirement during camp. Joshua Dobbs was signed earlier in the week and also saw snaps.

That is not evaluation or caution. That is a room that changed shape with no notice, and an undrafted rookie getting the kind of extended look that ordinarily takes an injury and two weeks to produce.
