Two More Camp Injuries Land on the 49ers and Commanders

Two more significant training-camp injuries landed this week, both to projected playoff contenders.

Two more names came off the board this week, and both belong to teams whose depth charts were already thin at the position.

The two

49ers general manager John Lynch confirmed wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will need season-ending surgery for a recurring PCL issue. Commanders left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps in 1-on-1 drills and is expected to miss most if not all of 2026, on a 4-to-7-month recovery timeline.

Green Bay and the Jets also reported soft-tissue and lower-body issues over the weekend. Those are the ordinary background noise of August; the two above are not.

Why the position matters more than the name

A left tackle on a 4-to-7-month timeline is a different problem from a skill-position absence, because the replacement is not a like-for-like swap. It is a shuffle down the line that moves three players out of position rather than one. Recurring is also the word doing work in Pearsall's case: a PCL issue that has returned is a different medical question from a first occurrence, and it is why the season-ending call came in August rather than after a rehab attempt.

Reading the camp-injury tally honestly

It is tempting to call any cluster of August injuries a trend. The honest version is narrower: these are three contenders absorbing losses at positions where they had little margin, in a window where every team is absorbing something. What separates a headline from an actual roster problem is depth at that specific spot, not the count.
