The Injuries Reshaping Depth Charts Before Anyone Has Played a Real Snap
Preseason injuries rarely decide seasons, but they do decide who gets the snaps that reveal what a roster actually has.
Preseason injuries rarely decide seasons, but they do decide who gets the snaps that reveal what a roster actually has. Several teams are finding that out at once.
Carolina
Chuba Hubbard is week to week with a hamstring and will miss Carolina's second preseason game, against the Bills. The team's coach said he is confident Hubbard will be ready for the regular-season opener, which is the part of the sentence that matters. Jonathon Brooks is expected to start in his place, and a hamstring in mid-August is a very different thing from a hamstring in mid-September.
San Francisco
Ricky Pearsall underwent season-ending surgery on his ongoing PCL injury. That is the hardest item on this list and the least ambiguous. It closes a year rather than interrupting one.
Washington
Laremy Tunsil is out indefinitely with a torn triceps, which puts real pressure on the left tackle spot in front of Jayden Daniels. Indefinite is doing work in that sentence: the team has not put a return on it, and the blind side of a young quarterback is not a position where you improvise cheerfully.
The shorter items
- Carson Beck (Cardinals) is out for the preseason opener with a rib injury sustained in the Hall of Fame Game. The team's own description was closer to zero long-term worry than to a concern.
- Jordyn Tyson (Saints) left practice with a hamstring the team described as not serious.
- DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon (Eagles) are both dealing with hamstrings, which is now less a coincidence than a pattern in Philadelphia's receiver room.
Why the list reads the way it does
Three of these carry team language that is deliberately reassuring, and one does not. Beck's ribs and Tyson's hamstring came with explicit not-serious framing. Hubbard came with a stated confidence about Week 1. Pearsall came with a surgery date, and Tunsil came with no date at all.
That is the distinction worth carrying into a draft room. An absence with a return attached moves snaps for two weeks. An absence without one moves a depth chart for a season.
The Pearsall and Tunsil situations were first reported here on August 9; both have since hardened rather than improved.
