Camp's first season-enders: Pearsall out with a PCL, Scourton with an ACL

Camp injuries close a door for one player and open one for whoever is next. The second half is where the value is, because it moves before ADP does.

The Hall of Fame Game opens preseason play Thursday, and two players are already out for the year. Both were confirmed within the last week, and both change a depth chart before a single snap counts.

Ricky Pearsall, 49ers wide receiver

General manager John Lynch announced Pearsall will be placed on season-ending injured reserve and undergo surgery to repair his PCL. The recovery window is six to twelve months, with a target of returning for 2027.

The knee started bothering him in the first week of camp, aggravating an injury he had carried since the 2025 season, and the swelling was enough to concern the organisation before the decision was made.

Isolated PCL injuries are less common in the NFL than ACL or Achilles tears, so there is a thinner base of comparable cases to project a return to pre-injury form from. A six-to-twelve month window is a wide window for a reason. Treat 2027 as the question, not this season.

Nic Scourton, Panthers edge rusher

Scourton tore the ACL in his right knee on the first day of training-camp practice, confirmed by MRI that Thursday. He misses the full 2026 season, his second in the league after Carolina drafted him in 2025.

The detail that has made this more than an injury note: it happened during the mandatory five-day acclimation period, and the NFL Players Association has opened an investigation into the circumstances. The Panthers say they are cooperating.

Carolina's edge rotation moves up a spot immediately, and it does so in the first week of camp, which is the earliest a depth-chart change can be known.

Three more worth tracking, with the caveats attached

Kenyon Sadiq, the Jets' rookie tight end, had a setback in his return from sports hernia surgery in late May. He practised the first three days of camp and then sat. Head coach Aaron Glenn described it as "a little setback", put him on a maintenance programme and said he should be ready for Week 1. That is a firmer read than most camp setbacks get, so the downgrade here is short-term.

Zach Ertz has been cleared for all football activities after a torn ACL and intends to play a fourteenth season at 35. Note what the reporting actually says: he is a free agent. Cleared and unsigned is not a draftable situation until the second half of that sentence changes.

Malik Nabers went through a full practice as the Giants opened camp, and head coach John Harbaugh said he looked good. The honest version includes the rest of it: the Week 4 knee injury needed swelling to subside before surgery, and he had scar tissue removed from the same knee in the spring. Encouraging, not resolved.

The read

Camp injuries do two things at once. They close a door for the player and open one for whoever is next on the depth chart, and the second half is where the value is, because it moves before average draft position does.

San Francisco and Carolina both now have a backup with a clearer path to Week 1 snaps than they had a fortnight ago. The window to act on that is roughly now, while the news is still an injury story rather than a starter story. Once preseason reps begin Thursday, the market catches up quickly.
