Moderna won the first U.S. approval for an mRNA flu vaccine, and the revenue is a 2027 story

A first-in-class approval and a first-year revenue contribution are two different events, and this one separates them by about a year for a reason that has nothing to do with the science.

The FDA approved Moderna's mRNA seasonal influenza vaccine, mFlusiva, for adults aged 50 and older. It is the first mRNA seasonal flu shot cleared in the United States.

The near-term revenue impact is limited, and the reason is a calendar rather than a clinical one.

The season was already bought

Seasonal influenza vaccine is contracted early. Health systems, pharmacy chains and public buyers commit to supply well before the season starts, so a product that clears approval after that window has largely missed the year regardless of how good it is.

Moderna missed the early 2026-27 buying window. Meaningful contribution is expected more in 2027, which is the first season the product can be sold into from the start rather than after the fact.

What a first-in-class approval is actually worth

The approval establishes a regulatory path for the platform, not just clearance for one product. That distinction is the substance of the news: the second mRNA respiratory approval is a different conversation with a regulator than the first one.

The manufacturing argument follows from it. mRNA production cycles are shorter than egg-based ones, and the value of that speed is concentrated in exactly the seasons where the strain selection made months in advance turns out to be wrong. In a season where the match is good it is worth very little.

How to hold it

Approvals are dated and public; revenue from them is neither, and the gap between the two is where most of the misreading happens. The honest framing here is that a milestone was reached in August 2026 and the commercial test of it arrives in 2027.
