Home Depot's CEO Takes Medical Leave, and the Company Named Who Steps In

Home Depot said chief executive Ted Decker is taking a medical leave of absence, and named the two executives covering the role while he is out.

Home Depot said chief executive Ted Decker is taking a medical leave of absence, and the shares fell on the news. Decker is 63 and has held the role since March 2022. The leave is expected to last a few months.

The company did not leave the question of coverage open. In the same announcement it named chief financial officer Richard McPhail and executive vice president Ann-Marie Campbell as jointly overseeing CEO operations while Decker is out. Both are internal, both are senior, and the arrangement was disclosed alongside the leave rather than after it.

Why the stock moved anyway

Naming interim leadership immediately removes the version of this story where a large-cap retailer has no stated plan. It does not remove the underlying uncertainty, which is about duration and about what the top of the company is focused on while the clock runs.

Home Depot's results are tied closely to the residential repair and remodelling cycle, and that cycle has been working against it: elevated mortgage rates, softer existing-home sales, and a consumer who defers large projects before small ones. Leadership continuity carries more weight when the operating backdrop is already being scrutinised, which is roughly the position the company is in.

What would settle it

The practical questions are about capital allocation more than about strategy. Buyback pacing, the tone of guidance in the coming quarters, and whether any planned decisions slip while two executives split a third job are the things a longer absence would actually touch.

The immediate reaction looks like uncertainty being priced, not a judgement about the business, which has not changed in the last day. Clarity on how long the leave runs is what determines whether the pressure on the shares turns out to be temporary.
