Asia Followed Wall Street Higher, but the Leadership Got Narrower
Asian shares edged higher Monday morning following Friday's record S&P 500 close.
Asian shares edged higher Monday morning after Friday's record close in the S&P 500. European futures were mixed. U.S. futures paused.
The pause is the information
An overnight session that follows a record close without extending it is usually reading the calendar rather than the tape. Wednesday's CPI print is the next thing capable of changing the rate story, and there is little reason to take a position ahead of it that Friday's move has not already taken.
Narrower than the index suggests
The more useful detail from last week is that raw growth stopped being sufficient on its own for several AI-linked and software names. Reports that would have been rewarded three months ago were met with a shrug or worse.
That is selective leadership, and it is a different market from one where an index record means broad participation. An index can print a high on a handful of names while the median stock does nothing. Knowing which of those two you are in matters more than the record itself.
