Paper trading (a "trading simulator") replaces real cash with virtual cash while keeping everything else realistic: you place buy and sell orders, they fill at live market prices, and your profit and loss moves exactly as it would with real money. It's the standard way new traders learn: and the way experienced traders pressure-test a strategy before committing capital.
Why practice trading options?
- Learn the mechanics risk-free. Strikes, expiries, premium, and position sizing are easier to understand once you've actually placed the trade: without paying tuition in real losses.
- Test a strategy. See how an idea behaves across a few sessions before risking capital.
- Build the habit. Track entries, exits and P&L so you can review what worked.
- Stay calm. Rehearsing removes a lot of the emotion that trips people up with real money on the line.

How to start paper trading in four steps
- Open the wallet. Your $100,000 in virtual cash is ready immediately: no card and no signup just to try.
- Pick something to trade. Choose a stock, an options contract, or crypto, and place a buy or sell order the same way you would with real money.
- Watch it fill at live prices. Orders execute against the current market, then your position, profit and loss, and trade history update as prices move.
- Review and reset. Study what worked in your trade history, then reset the wallet whenever you want a clean slate to test the next idea.
Paper trading vs. real trading, what's the same, what isn't
A good simulator mirrors the mechanics of live markets so the practice transfers. A few honest caveats are worth keeping in mind:
- Same: live prices, order types, position sizing, and how profit and loss move tick by tick.
- Different: there's no real slippage, partial fills, or financing cost, and, most importantly, none of the emotion that comes with real capital on the line. Live trading also carries fees and the genuine risk of loss.
That's why paper trading is best used to learn mechanics and pressure-test a strategy, not to "prove" a system will print money. Treat a strong paper run as a green light to start small with real size, not a guarantee.
From practice to the real flow
