Justin Herbert Expected to Play Limited Snaps
Harbaugh’s plan was one series. The 49ers game was live reps for McDaniel’s book, not a dress rehearsal of Week 1 volume. Limited snaps means limited snaps.
Jim Harbaugh did not bury the plan in a depth-chart riddle. After Tuesday’s joint practice with San Francisco, Justin Herbert said live reps mattered for the offense, and Chargers.com wrote that he would play a series against the 49ers on Thursday night. Separate recaps of the same week had Harbaugh’s group limiting him to the first drive. Yahoo had kickoff at 7 p.m. PT on Aug. 20. That is the file: limited snaps, on purpose, in Mike McDaniel’s first Chargers preseason look with the starters.
The joint on Tuesday already gave you the shape of the week. Chargers.com said Herbert and Omarion Hampton stood out; it also said San Francisco had the upper hand in a two-minute drill. Pass-rush notes from the same joint circulated with Nick Bosa’s name on them. None of that changes Thursday’s script. A series is a series. It is not 35 pass attempts.
What fantasy does with one series
Nothing, except log that the arm is available. Redraft Herbert was never sitting on a preseason passing line. Superflex managers who wanted a full-game look do not get one. DFS players who wanted cheap preseason passing volume should be looking at whoever plays the second quarter, not at the starter’s first drive.
The actual information is schematic. McDaniel is in, the starters are getting a live series against a Shanahan defense they just practiced against, and Harbaugh is not risking the season for a dress rehearsal. That is a health-and-install decision. Treat it that way.
The takeaway
Herbert was expected to play limited snaps — a series, the first drive in the reports we have — against the 49ers. File the availability. Do not file the stats.
